There are three types of ultraviolet light: UV-A, UV-B and UV-C.
Unlike UV-A and UV-B, short-wavelength UV-C is completely filtered by the atmosphere and does not reach the earth’s surface. With a wavelength ranging from 200 nm to 300 nm, UV-C is the only germicidal ultraviolet light, with a peak of effectiveness at 254 nm.
UV-C disinfection is being used in the medical and laboratory world for years now. Viruses can only survive and replicate inside a living cell. When exposed to 254 nm UV-C light, living cells absorb it into their DNA, RNA, and proteins.
Absorption by DNA and RNA renders the cells sterile, whilst absorption by proteins leads to the rupture of cell walls and subsequently to its death.
